Examining an Exploratory Essay

May 12th, 2010

What is an exploratory essay? This type of an essay is unique. Generally, in most essays, the introduction to an essay must provide a clear position or one essential thought or focus of the project. But this certain type of paper does not start in this manner. It is one of a kind. Instead of choosing a stance on a particular issue or subject and then using the rest of the essay to prove why you think or feel this specific way, the author doesn’t get to where he or she stands on the topic. Hence, the term “exploratory”. This means that the topic should be thoroughly explored without bias.

It is because this type of essay is not written with a certain viewpoint that the author should pay attention to the detail of presenting facts only. The writer is supposed to be more concerned with finding out everything they can about the topic without leaning in any direction or arguing a point. You are not trying to get the reader to see your side, remember, you have no side.

This can be difficult for many people if the subject matter is something that they are indeed passionate about. An exploratory essay is meant to educate yourself as well as your reader in a purely unbiased manner. Explore the issue, all sides, and then present all the facts surrounding it. Steer clear of opinions and speculations. Step a side from the topic and look at it from all angles carefully.

There is no set structure on how to create or layout this paper. As far as formatting goes, an MLA style essay and an APA style essay are widely used. Of course, it depends more on the requirements of the assignment and the topic. It is essential, however, that you remain consistent. Don’t switch modes throughout your essay. This will only make the paper look sloppy.

If the essay author can research essay topics on their own, it is important that they carefully decide. It is much easier if the subject is something that the writer does not already know much about. This will give the genuine feel of being an exploratory essay instead of formulating the entire essay around some set theory or conclusion on a matter. It is all about learning and the steps to arriving at various conclusions through the steps of discovery. If a person starts out with their mind made up over a specific issue then the essay could be tainted and the reader may catch it. Thus reducing the overall grade of the paper.

An exploratory essay can be a lot of fun to write believe it or not. If done properly, your reader will enjoy watching your steps of deduction and discovery. This is a process that should not be rushed so take your time. Don’t allow your work on this paper to be choppy. Getting a good grade can be easy when you follow these tips on how to write an essay of this sort.
