Tips for Writing Good College Essays

May 3rd, 2010

So, you are out of high school and can’t wait for the fun of college to begin. You have probably been told about the fun party life when it dawns on you, “uh oh, I have a 1000 word essay to write and I don’t know where to start!” First and foremost, don’t panic. Essays are not that big of a deal. Sure many people would just rather buy an essay, but for those who would rather earn their grades there are five basic tips to follow to find success. If you follow them you too can write good college essays.

Tip One: Time is essential. If you rush, you can likely guarantee that your reader will notice. Essays need to be done right and the only way to make sure that it reflects time and effort is to allow yourself the time to make the effort. Pick a place to study and prepare. There are two common ways to write a quality essay. One way is to complete portions, or steps, of the essay writing process daily. The second way is to set aside a specific allotted amount of time. Either way, these can be beneficial to maintaining discipline so that overall quality does not suffer.

Tip Two: Research is vital to any essay, all good college essays are built on the investigation. First is the search for the title and then comes the supporting facts you wish to create the essay. The chief importance of this part of the creative method is to be absolutely sure that what you are writing is accurate. An essay that is full of false or speculative information is going to hurt your grade and make you look bad to the reader.

Tip Three: Outlining is an aspect that some agree with and some do not. Outlining is mostly to make sure that your thoughts and data are organized. A writer doesn’t want the essay to be unorganized or sloppy. This will have a definite negative impact on the grade.

Tip Four: Writing the essay begin with the solid introduction. The introduction to an essay must focus clearly on the main points or angle of your idea. Every topic you can think of has a variety of angles or sides that a person can take. The writer should choose one before starting and stick with it. Good college essays will be powerful enough to make the point and present a clear side to the subject.

Tip Five: Proofreading is a must! Don’t get wrapped up in just how good you are at writing. This is a major pitfall. Everyone makes mistakes and the fact is, mistakes are costly. If you don’t want to do it you can easily go to a friend or relative or basically anyone you trust to give you honest feedback and ask them to read your work.

The main point that I am trying to make here is that in order to produce good college essays the work must be as close to error free as possible. These tips can help you focus, maintain discipline, aid in more organized writing and ensure that you hand in a project that is worth your reader’s time.
