This type of essay combines the usage of strong logic and reasoning with facts in support of the idea so that it does not totally sound like an argument. A persuasive essay, at the end, is able to convince its reader to your way of thinking.

Writing a persuasive essay is not easy, so it is better to plan it thoroughly. The essay should contain an introduction, main body paragraphs, the opposite point of view and a closing paragraph. Introduction should give some background information on the topic in such a way that the reader becomes interested in your essay and it should also clearly present your point of view. All body paragraphs should elaborate on your idea with strong supporting evidence. The paragraph with the opposite view point should also be elaborate and accurate and should leave no point for discussion. It should clearly show that you understand both the pros and the cons of the topic. Conclusion should relate to the main idea and cleverly summarize the whole argument. Throughout the essay, a flow should be maintained from one paragraph to another.

While preparing the essay, keep on thinking about the possible questions related to your topic that one might ask. This will help in focusing on the different aspects of the topic. The following should be kept in mind while writing this essay-

• Know the idea behind the essay and choose your side of it. The topic and your thinking towards it should be very clear and you should be able to express convincingly why took that particular side.
• Know your audience and study them keenly. Know beforehand whether your audience agrees with your side, disagrees with it or is neutral towards the topic.
• Read extensively about the topic and gather as much data as possible because it is important to have thorough knowledge on the topic.
• Persuasive essays are generally based on some facts, so use statistical figures and other data in support of your argument. Using examples and quotes from experts who support the idea will help cement your point.
• An argumentative essay always has two sides and in the essay the other side’s point of view should also be presented. Elaborate on the other side and then use logic and reason to explain why your side is more legitimate then the other side.
• Check your essay for grammatical error or spelling mistakes.

After completing the essay, read it to see if it makes sense and will your reader’s be convinced. The facts presented in the essay should be genuine and should lead to conclusions and if at some point it deviates to some other important matter, it should lead back to your idea. In entirety, a persuasive essay should be able to captivate the reader’s attention so that they keep on thinking about it even after they have stopped reading it.

For instance, you could be writing an essay supporting the science of astrology and arguing against the belief that it is superstition; then your thesis statement could be ‘Astrology as a science has existed since time immemorial, and hundreds of research papers over the decades have proven times and again that there is rationale behind astrology. It is not merely superstitious belief, but is a science that studies the movements of planets and their positions. Let’s look at these facts in more detail.’

Now, move on to the body of the essay to elaborate on your argument. Present specific information related to your statement and why you think that one part of the argument is stronger than the other. Describe the pros and cons of both sides of the argument and add solid facts to prove your point. Remember, in an argumentative essay, there is no scope for emotional thinking or language. Anticipate questions and present the answers much in advance. Back up your statements with substantial evidence and logical reasoning. Provide reasonable comparisons between the two parts of the argument and state the reasons of one point being stronger than the other with examples, data and information.

Finally, by the time you reach your concluding paragraph of the essay, the reader should have been able to form a fairly good idea of which side of the argument you are on. Remember that in future, when you write huge dissertations or term papers, your compelling and persuasive writing skills are going to come in very handy.  Writing an argumentative essay could therefore be a first step for you in that direction too. The most important thing to bear in mind is that you need to do enough research and gather ample evidence to support your argument. You can even go a step further and cite the sources from where you gathered this data.  Think of it like an argument between two people. The person who has the maximum number of facts and figures to support his point of view gets the most number of votes and ultimately wins the argument. Unlike other essays, an argumentative essay needs to be packed with information and statistics and will not win the hearts or attention of the reader if it is crammed with flowery language without substance.

A piece of influential and persuasive writing can even change minds of masses or can bring a new theory for this entire system. Every one around can write, but the difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ writing skills is defined by the level of expertise and learning – only proportional to our ability of eliminating common writing problems. A persuasive essay or an article is quite well enough to describe your personality in terms of your approach and mindset, in front of your readers. In this article I will discuss some key points for writing a ‘powerful’ essay, assuming that you are grammatically sane:

  • Stick to the topic:

Always intend to stick with the topic. It makes your piece of writing interesting as well as understandable for your readers. If you are a student and you are asked to write some good essays or a thesis report, do not try to diverge from your topic or in simple words, never swing your stuff over the head of your instructors but make it easier and word to word clear for them. This approach is a basic necessity for a piece of writing to be influential.

  • Move with a moderate pace:

Dynamic shifts in the theme of your essay can distort the idea behind your writing. Convey your message keeping in mind that your readers expect you to walk along with them. In some cases writers are required to move with some rapidity. In this condition, summarize your idea in the ending lines of your essay so that readers can catch it.

  • Accomplish your purpose:

A persuasive essay, no matter how short or long it is, always tends to convince readers and thus transmits your thought. So, expect your readers to read between your lines and receive the message.

  • “Jargonize”:

Use some jargon if necessary, as it develops a good and refreshing impact of your writing plus it also increases the acceptability of your essay. This never means to over load your essay with jargon, but handle them as they are gems and utilize them carefully and not redundantly.

  • Valid argumentation:

Argue and justify your ideas sensibly.  It means you should never try to prove some thing with absurdity and using illogical statements. A persuasive essay is one which is sensibly structured and quite plausible by the readers.

  • Bell-Curve approach:

A typical bell-curve approach makes an essay to rise linearly, touch the maxima and to end linearly. It means your first paragraph should be an introduction, middle sections are to be linear progressions of the subject and ending sections should be summarizing. This results in an excellent and controlled piece of writing – a work of genius.

A well written and influencing essay is considered next to nothing. Your personal motive beside your core purpose of writing a potentially persuasive essay is to get knowledge. When you are knowledgeable enough to educate people and help them out in their writing problems – especially in article or essay topics formulation and sharing of ideas from these topics, your own writing becomes a source of inspiration for others. This is not as easy as it looks, but nothing is impossible – only if you move your fingers!
